Somewhere around 1770 we see some surname spelling go from two n’s to just one. Prior to coming to America, the spellings are even more diverse as records were basically hand written from how the name was pronounced.

Castle in Thun, Switzerland where Melchoir Brenneman was imprisoned for his faith in the year 1659. The Swiss Brethren were an early anabaptist group that were severely persecuted, assets seized and eventually fled to Germany and the Americas in the 17th century.
